Gola Sweetgrass was founded by Jocelyn Patterson, a designer, historic preservation professional, and entrepreneur with a passion for celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Gullah Geechee people through craftsmanship, storytelling, and design.

Raised in Georgetown County, South Carolina, Jocelyn has dedicated her career to preserving African American history and ensuring that the stories of historically significant communities continue to be shared with future generations. She holds a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Clemson University, where her research focused on preserving historic African American cemeteries and documenting the cultural landscapes that tell the stories of formerly enslaved communities.

Gola Sweetgrass was born from a desire to create more than beautiful footwear. Inspired by the artistry of Gullah Geechee sweetgrass basket makers and the enduring traditions passed down through generations, Jocelyn envisioned a brand that celebrates heritage through contemporary design while creating meaningful opportunities for people to connect with culture through hands-on experiences.
