Every pair of Gola Sweetgrass sandals is inspired by the resilience, artistry, and enduring traditions of the Gullah Geechee people of the southeastern coast of the United States and the Gola people of Sierra Leone.

For centuries, the Gullah Geechee people preserved African traditions through language, foodways, music, storytelling, and craftsmanship. Among their most celebrated artistic traditions is sweetgrass basket weaving—a skill passed from one generation to the next that reflects both creativity and cultural identity.

The name Gola Sweetgrass honors this shared heritage. "Gola" recognizes the Gola people of West Africa, whose cultural legacy is woven into the history of the Gullah Geechee community through the transatlantic slave trade. "Sweetgrass" pays tribute to the iconic baskets handwoven from sweetgrass, longleaf pine needles, and palmetto, which have become internationally recognized symbols of Gullah Geechee artistry and perseverance.

Although these sandals are a contemporary design, they are created with the same spirit that has sustained generations of artisans: honoring tradition while embracing creativity and innovation.
